The Achievement Gap. Crumbling Infrastructure. These are just two of many issues in Montclair that has been discussing for years. But for years, nothing was ever done. Staircases fell. Lockers fell. Our black and brown students saw no changes in their educational outcomes. Montclair was great at pointing out problems, but never getting anything done.
In the past 18 months, we have seen more concrete steps to solve problems in Montclair Public Schools than in countless years past. Earlier use of appropriate dyslexia screening. Science of Reading. Orton Gillingham instruction. Increased instructional time. Research based RTI. After school tutoring. The return of free Pre-K to Montclair with an eye on universal availability. Periodic special education program evaluations. Career training. Dual enrollment for high school students to earn college credits. The passing of the historic $187 million dollar bond referendum to fix long ignored facilities. These are just some examples of the concrete steps taken to finally solve the problems here in Montclair.
